Sarah Koppelman (Philips), Volunteer and Community Engagement Manager

Sarah grew up in suburban Kansas City and first visited the Pacific Northwest for a summer internship with MSHI back in 2010. She fell in love with Mount St. Helens and environmental education, and returned for four more seasons as a USFS interpretive ranger on the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. After several years away from the volcano while working with OMSI, Trackers Earth, the Oregon Zoo, and the Sauvie Island Center, she was thrilled to return to MSHI in 2019 as our Volunteer & Community Engagement Manager. In 2024, Sarah transitions to become our Development & Community Engagement Director, overseeing fundraising, communications, and outreach. Sarah is passionate about empowering people to discover their own personal connections with nature, science, and stewardship, and she believes that the transformative landscape of Mount St. Helens has a unique power to open eyes and change lives.

When she's not working, you can find Sarah hiking, running, baking, crocheting, playing guitar, or nerding out on natural history.
