John Mahoney, 2025 Assistant Guide

John MSHI in 2025 after spending fourteen seasons in the world of professional baseball, trading ballparks for backcountry trails. Raised in the shadow of Mount St. Helens, his love for the outdoors began early, clearing storm-downed trails as a “volunteer” for his grandfather, a Ranger with the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. That early spark turned into a lifelong curiosity for the region he calls home. Whether he's hiking, skiing or simply wondering, “Where do you think that trail goes?”, John continues to explore the Pacific Northwest through ever-evolving lenses of wonder and appreciation. When he's not perched at the rim of Mount St. Helens, you’ll likely find him adventuring down a Cascade volcano or paddleboarding across alpine waters with his trusty companion Lou (short for Loowit) trotting close behind.
