MSHI is so excited to be welcoming our first ever artist-in-resident, Ian Ramsey to Mount St. Helens! Ian will be spending six days at the Science and Learning Center at Coldwater in late July writing poems, engaging with summer programs, reading poetry, and engaging with the landscape in a way only artists can. We can't wait to read the poems that come out of Ian's time with us!
Ian Ramsey Ian Ramsey is the author of the poetry collection Hackable Animal,which was a finalist for the Prism Climate Prize from Homebound Publications.He is a writer and educator and backcountry athlete based in Maine who holds an MFA in Creative Writing from the Rainier Writing Workshop. His writing has appeared in Pacific Review, Off the Coast, Flyway, Terrain.org, Orion, Appalachia, Cutthroat, High Desert Journal, Deep Wild, and the anthologies Writing for Peace and Maine Voices. Ramsey has taught at North Yarmouth Academy for 25 years, where he is the founding director of the Kauffmann Program for Environmental Writing and Wilderness Exploration. He frequently collaborates with climate scientists to communicate research to non-scientists and has lectured and done artist residencies on four continents. His honors include the Howard Small Chair for Excellence in Teaching, a Japan Fulbright Memorial Fellowship, and being selected as a finalist for Grammy Music Educator of the Year. In addition to writing and teaching, Ramsey is a sponsored wilderness athlete and kayak coach, Maine Guide, and a founding board member of Physiology First, a non-profit that uses leading-edge tools to help students, families and educators manage anxiety and perform at a higher level.
