Dear MSHI Community,
MSHI is excited to announce the selection of new executive leadership. As of January 1, 2025, Alyssa Hoyt and Abigail Groskopf have assumed the roles of Co-Executive Directors.
This strategic decision reflects MSHI’s commitment to:
We are confident this new leadership structure will position MSHI for continued growth and success.
Abi has been with MSHI for over 12 years, starting as a program coordinator and gaining skills, knowledge, and relationships as her responsibilities and the organization grew. She has been Programs Director since 2016. Her passion for Mount St. Helens and outdoor education alongside her skills in nonprofit management provide MSHI with a steady, knowledgeable, and confident Co-Director.
Alyssa began work with MSHI in 2021 as a volunteer, came on staff in 2023 as Strategic Projects Director, and has served as Acting Executive Director since May 2024. Before coming to MSHI, Alyssa worked as a nonprofit consultant, held a variety of nonprofit positions, and completed her Masters in Public Administration. Her love for the outdoors and community-building – combined with her energy, drive, and strategic thinking – complement Abi’s skills and knowledge. Combined, their talents will continue to provide MSHI with strategic, strong, and visionary leadership.
Abi and Alyssa are excited to take on the opportunities and challenges that await MSHI in 2025 and into the future! Youth education, guided adventures, family summer camps, GeoGirls (registration is now open!), volunteer opportunities, the Volcano Naturalist Program, and all the MSHI programs will benefit from their vision, dedication to Mount St. Helens, and leadership.
"Co-leadership is a strategic way to support both nonprofit leadership and organizational health,” says Alyssa. “When the challenges of leadership and the weight of an organization are distributed between two people, the organization is better for it. It provides an opportunity for collaboration, teamwork, and personal and organizational growth in a supported, healthy way."
Thanks for being a part of our community,
Rex Burkholder, outgoing board chair
Mary Sauer, incoming board chair
