Ape Canyon Hike: Lahars, Big Trees and Fall Color

Instructor: Darvel Lloyd
October 13, 2011

On this field seminar, Darvel Lloyd, a naturalist with decades of experience, will lead participants on an exploration of the remote east side of Mount St. Helens.  The Ape Canyon hike is one of the most fascinating trail hikes in the Monument. Along the journey, he will teach us about how the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens devastated the landscape below us yet spared the old-growth forest that surrounds us. Bring your cameras and Darvel will help you capture the spectacular views of the chasm of former Shoestring Glacier, precipitous Ape Canyon, the Plains of Abraham and Mount St. Helens, Mount Adams and Mount Rainier. Fall colors will likely be at their peak during this seminar.
