2012 Pine Creek Information Station/Cascade Peaks Volcano Volunteer
The Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument and partners will support the work of volunteers at the Pine Creek Information Station and/or Cascade Peaks. This is a unique opportunity to volunteer in a meaningful way, assisting the public and the forest by providing information, direction, interpretation, sales and maintenance of the grounds.
Responsibilities include:
- Providing outstanding customer service and ensuring that visitors are served promptly, courteously and satisfactorily.
- Visitor contacts – collection of visitor use data, providing forest information, etc.
- Provide a variety of interpretive services to the public.
- Support the organization and management of volunteers as needed.
- Assist with general cashiering and sales; ensuring that transactions are accurately conducted and properly entered into the cash register including the sale and tracking of forest passes.
- Assist with monitoring the level of merchandise on shelves; restocking, inventorying and applying price when necessary.
- Working closely with the Discover Your Northwest Branch Manager to ensure that visitor feedback is taken into consideration in the operation of the sales area.
- Explain “fee” procedure to visitors of the forest.
- Notifying Law Enforcement of vandalism, public disturbance, accidents, and resource or facility damage.
- Provide initial emergency services and communication to the public as needed.
- Grounds and facility maintenance –limb cleanup, mowing lawns, blowing walkways and parking areas, window cleaning, litter pickup, routine restroom upkeep, etc.
Required Qualifications:
- Strong communication skills and ability to effectively and courteously serve the visiting public.
- Ability to properly operate a cash register and handle cash.
- Ability to solve problems positively and adapt to change rapidly.
- Organized, detail-oriented, able to lift up to 25 lbs. and stand for long periods.
- Must be at least 18 years of age or above.
- Valid driver’s license.
Desired Qualifications:
- Familiarity with the Mount St. Helens area and its principal visitor attractions.
- Basic first aid and CPR knowledge and training.
- Leadership experience and/or willingness to learn.
- Willingness to provide interpretation at other locations along the east side of Mount St. Helens.
- Ability to attend interpretive training in spring and/or mid season.
Time Preferred:
Negotiable, example of potential time commitment:
1. One to two days per week for at least 2-months,
2. Full-time, 5 days/week, at least 1-month, or
3. Four days a month, at least 2-months

- Basic uniforms and trainings provided by knowledgeable professionals at no cost to the volunteer.
- Volunteers will learn the basic scientific concepts of the fascinating volcanic landscape.
- First Aid and CPR training provided.
- Housing and camping may be available at both Pine Creek and Cascade Peaks.
- RV space with sewer and water hook up, (electricity and propane not available) available at Pine Creek. Self contained RV space available at Cascade Peaks.
- Ability to work with a growing and dynamic partnership group including USDA Forest Service, numerous non profit organizations, Skamania county representatives, numerous community members and user groups.
- Support the preservation of natural resources for future generations.
Supervision:
Supervision of volunteers jointly provided by the Mount St. Helens Institute and Discover Your Northwest. Volunteers will be asked to report directly to the Mount St. Helens Institute and/or Discover Your Northwest, periodic meetings will be held to address accomplishments, concerns, future goals, etc.
