Pine Creek Information Station Host

Located on the south side of Mount St. Helens, Pine Creek is nestled in a forested environment, adjacent to Swift Reservoir on the North Fork of the Lewis River.  There is access to RV sites, camping and limited housing at Pine Creek.  This is a unique volunteer opportunity to live and volunteer in a meaningful way, assisting the public by providing information, direction, interpretation, sales and maintenance of the grounds.

Facilities:

Upper and lower compounds.
Information and Interpretive site. 
Garbage dumpsters.

Recreation Opportunities:

Hiking trails, nearby river rafting access and fishing.

Campground Host benefits:

  • Free education about Mount St. Helens’ volcanic landscape.
  • First Aid and CPR training provided.
  • Government housing may be available.
  • RV space with sewer, water hook up, and electricity.
  • Some mileage reimbursement may be available.
  • Ability to work with a growing and dynamic partnership group including the US Forest Service, nonprofit organizations, Skamania county representatives, community members and user groups.
  • Support the preservation of natural resources for future generations.

Host Duties:

  • Provide customer service and ensure that visitors are served promptly, courteously and satisfactorily.
  • Help the public by providing forest information, etc.
  • Provide a variety of interpretive services to the public.
  • Organize and manage the schedule and duties of volunteers if needed.
  • General cashiering and sales: ensure that transactions are accurately conducted and properly entered into the cash register including the sale and tracking of NW Forest passes.
  • Monitor the level of merchandise on shelves; restock when necessary.
  • Work closely with the Discover Your Northwest branch manager to ensure that visitor feedback is taken into consideration in the operation of the sales area.
  • Assist in counting inventory; applying price labels, etc.
  • Grounds and facility maintenance: clean up limbs, mow lawns, blow walkways and parking areas, clean windows, pick up litter, maintain restrooms, etc.
  • Explain fee procedure to visitors of the forest.
  • Notify law enforcement of vandalism, public disturbance, accidents, and resource or facility damage.
  • Provide initial emergency services and communication to the public as needed.
  • Must be available on weekends.

Supervision:

Supervision of volunteers jointly provided by the Mount St. Helens Institute, US Forest Service and Discover Your Northwest. Volunteers will be asked to report directly to the Mount St. Helens Institute and/or Discover Your Northwest. Periodic meetings will be held to address accomplishments, concerns, future goals, etc.
