Campgrounds

Lower Falls Campground Host

Lower Falls Campground is located along the Lewis River at 1,900 feet elevation in a Douglas-fir forest fifteen miles southeast of Mount St. Helens. The campground is open from May through October. The nearest full-service community is Battle Ground, Washington. Battle Ground has a population of about 10,000 and has services such as grocery stores, gas stations, post office, police station, medical clinics, and fast food restaurants. Lower Falls is approximately 60 miles and a 1.5-hour drive from Battle Ground (or 2 hours from Vancouver).

Facilities:

Upper loop: 22 sites and two compost toilets.
Lower loop: 21 sites and two compost toilets.
Day use/picnic area: one compost toilet.
Sewage Dump.
Garbage dumpsters in each loop.
One hand pump.
No electrical hookups.

Recreational Opportunities:

Barrier-free trails, boardwalks, waterfall vistas, river access, hiking trails, fishing and nearby river-rafting access.

Campground Host benefits:

Free camping.
Host site has a septic tank.
Meeting people.
In some cases, reimbursement for certain items such as propane.

Host Duties

  • The major role of the Lower Falls campground host is to provide information. You will be provided maps and brochures of the surrounding area for public distribution. Hosts are provided with a radio for emergencies and to communicate with the USFS district office.
  • Perform light to moderate physical work such as picking up litter, cleaning campsites, raking, cleaning fire rings, etc.
  • Regularly clean and stock restrooms daily or as needed. Cleaning materials are provided.
  • Observe and report to Forest Service and Law Enforcement Officer of resource or facility damage.
  • Explain fee-payment procedure to visitors. Campground Hosts do not collect money from visitors.
  • Must be present on weekends.
