“One of the reasons I chose to volunteer at Mount St. Helens was my connection to the land. My great-grandparents had a cabin near Ariel, and I spent a lot of time there as a child. The first place I volunteered at was Ape Cave—a place I had visited a hundred times as a child. So it was meaningful to me to help improve it.”

JOIN THE CONSERVATION CORPS
Since 2004, our Conservation Corps volunteers have helped repair more than 400 miles of trails at Mount St. Helens—and they’re not done yet! These energetic folks—including families, college students, recreational groups, and scouts—usually serve for a day, weekend, or even a week to help maintain trails, repair structures, or undertake other outdoor activities to protect and conserve the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. They’re supervised by a crew leader and taught skills to ensure their safety as they use tools outdoors. Chances are, if you’ve hiked at Mount St. Helens, you’ve walked a trail that has been taken care of by these outdoor enthusiasts. Consider becoming one just for a day—or spend a whole summer at the volcano and make new friends.
